Types of KVH timber
There are two main types of KVH timber: KVH-SI and KVH-NSI. These are surface qualities, and therefore categorisations of the product for visible (SI) or non-visible use (NSI). In German, SI signifies sichtbar (visible) and NSI stands for nicht sichtbar (non-visible).
Visible application
High-quality timber for visible purposes must be free of defects and unique characteristics. KVH-SI (visible) is fully planed.
Standard EN 15497 specifies the type of cut, dimensional tolerances, the acceptability of taper as well as other properties.
Non-visible application
The KVH-NSI is smooth with a minimum of 50 per cent of lateral surfaces planed.
In terms of surface, certain irregularities are permitted, provided they do not affect structural integrity. These are aesthetic imperfections in the wood, such as longitudinal cracks, darker heartwood etc.
